Landscaping & Lighting:

The Honest Cost & Design Guide

Not Your Average Landscaping Company — And That’s On Purpose.

Most landscaping companies in the Carolinas focus on maintenance (mowing and blowing). Others focus on "low-bid" installs. Very few focus on design, longevity, and transparency.

At Fun Outdoor Living, we believe you shouldn't have to guess what a dream backyard costs. Whether you are looking for a lighting package in Matthews or a full estate transformation in Lake Wylie, this page covers exactly what you can expect to pay, what drives the price up (or down), and if professional design is actually worth the investment for you.

What Factors Drive the Price Up (or Down)?

Why do two similar-sized backyards often have a $20,000 price difference? It rarely comes down to "markup." It comes down to site conditions and material choices.

Site Access & Terrain

If we need a crane to lift trees over a house, or if your yard has significant slope requiring retaining walls and drainage (common in Charlotte clay), labor costs increase.

Plant Maturity

"Instant Privacy" costs more. Installing 15-gallon Hollies creates an immediate screen but costs 3x more than smaller 7-gallon options.

Hardscape Complexity

Curves, cuts, and intricate paver patterns take significantly longer to install than straight lines.

Lighting Fixture Materials

We use brass and copper fixtures (Vista/FX Luminaire). They cost more upfront than plastic big-box store lights but last 15+ years longer.

Phasing the Project

Implementing the "Master Plan" in stages (e.g., Hardscape in Spring, Plants in Fall).

Material Selection

Choosing concrete pavers over natural travertine or bluestone.

Younger Plant Material

Willingness to let plants grow in over 2–3 years allows for significant savings on the initial nursery bill.

Standard Access

A flat yard with a wide gate allowing machinery access reduces manual labor hours.

Realistic Price Ranges (2025-2026 Estimates)

We don't believe in "sticker shock." Here are realistic ranges for the projects we design and build in the Greater Charlotte area.

Landscape Lighting Package

$3,500 – $7,500

A professional system (8-15 brass fixtures) including transformer and timer. Focus on paths, uplighting trees, and architecture.

Softscape Refresh

Softscape
Refresh

$8,000 - $20,000

Removal of old growth, soil amendment, new design-led planting beds, mulch/pine needles, and minor boulder accents.

"Backyard, Built" Transformation

$25,000 – $60,000

A complete overhaul. Includes a paver patio (~400 sq ft), extensive landscaping/privacy screening, comprehensive lighting, and often a fire feature.

Luxury Estate (BUILD.)

$75,000 – $150,000+

Full-scale construction. Multi-level hardscapes, outdoor kitchens, major drainage engineering, mature specimen trees, and estate-wide audio/lighting.

Historical Pricing Trend Note: Since 2020, the cost of raw landscape materials (stone, PVC, nursery stock) has risen ~25% industry-wide. Waiting another year often results in a higher project cost due to these macro-inflationary trends.

Why Are Some Companies So "Cheap"? (The Hidden Costs)

If you get three quotes, one will likely be significantly lower. It is tempting to take the deal. But in the landscaping industry, a "cheap" price tag usually hides a future cost.

The “Lifetime Cost” Trap:

  • The 12-Month Plant: Low-bid installers often skip soil amendment. Plants look great for 6 months, then suffocate in compacted clay. Cost to fix: Paying for the project twice.

  • Drainage Disasters: Cheap patios often lack proper pitch or sub-base drainage. This leads to settling pavers or water pooling against your home’s foundation.

  • Voltage Drop: Poorly wired lighting systems save money on wire but result in dim, flickering lights that burn out transformers.

Our Philosophy: We design for the 10-year timeline, not just the install day photo. We may be more expensive upfront, but our “Lifetime Cost” is lower because we do it right the first time.

Financing: Keeping Cash Flow Simple

Many of our clients choose to finance their outdoor projects to keep their liquid cash available for other investments.

12 Months at 0% Interest

Same-as-cash options are available for qualified buyers.

Low Monthly Payment Plans

Spread the cost of a "Backyard, Built" package over 5-10 years, similar to a home improvement loan or HELOC.

Unbiased Verdict: Is It Really Worth It?

Is hiring a high-end landscape design firm right for everyone? No.

Frequent Questions (FAQs)

Yes. We treat landscape design like architecture. A small design retainer ensures you get a thoughtful, to-scale plan that considers drainage, elevation, and long-term growth. This fee is often credited toward your project if you move forward with us.

Absolutely. We design master plans that can be installed in phases. However, we recommend installing wire/sleeves before sod or pavers go down to save money on labor later.

A standard lighting install takes 1-2 days. A full backyard transformation typically takes 2-4 weeks depending on weather.
